If you have ever had the pleasure to visit Crystal River and have stopped over at Hunter Springs for a view of our charming City Park than you probably encountered a very significant icon. Josh Hensley stood out among the crowd in most cases because he was always dressed as Pirates of the Caribbean character “Captain Jack Sparrow”.

At Hunter Springs, we consider Josh Hensley our Crystal River Sparrow. He was there each day to rent his custom paddle boards, Big Foot Paddle Boards, and mingle with visitors and residents alike.

He was truly an icon for the children that came to the park to play. Even at a distance, Josh had a way of making people smile. Many stopped to take photos with him and ask him about his character. Josh had his way of sharing a special experience and ensuring his guests had a good time on his paddle boards.

He even taught himself multiple tricks on the paddle board which required strength, endurance, and agility.  Josh also participated in local raft racing, and was seen at almost any festival or event around town. People from all over would come to support their local Crystal River Sparrow in different types of competitions.

Josh also played his part in our mission. He spent many hours volunteering, not only with Save Crystal River, but any opportunity he saw would help protect and preserve the waterways he loved so dearly.

In honor of Josh Hensely, a memorial took place on September 23rd, 2019. It was open to all who knew Josh and wanted to pay their respects to his bountiful gifts. The crowd that flourished for Josh was a great representation of all the people he truly impacted.

To his Family and friends, I offer my sincerest condolences to you. I pray for everyone’s comfort in this heartbreaking event. I believe Josh is upside down on a paddle board smiling at us, while we all come together in his memory.
