In the month of May we see Florida begin to flourish into it’s summer time beauty. Many people are on the water enjoying all of Crystal River’s fun recreational activities. Fishing, kayaking, pleasure cruising in the Bay, enjoying Jet Skis, and boat skiing.

However,

many people may forget there is a prop penance to pay if we don’t protect the natural growing eelgrass in the waterways. Crystal River includes one of two areas that are among the largest eelgrass beds in the continental North America. We must all be aware of the infliction we can cause to our underwater habitat.

Some harm that may occur to eelgrass beds will happen by ripping and tearing out large proportions of vegetation by boat propellers or drifting anchors, which may lead to long term damage.

Eelgrass beds are important

to the ecological system in the Gulf of Mexico and inside the bay for many reasons. One reason that may be relevant to visitors, is that the eelgrass helps clarify water, and helps balance water chemistry. Many visitors would not be interested in the spring systems and shallow waters of Gulf of Mexico if the water was not clear and pristine.

Repairing damaged eelgrass beds can take decades. But, preserving our eelgrass beds takes only consideration, and a few extra minutes of your time.

Anchor scar. This damage was caused by dragging an anchor through the eelgrass bed.

Here are a few tips to ensure you’re leaving a positive footprint on our environment:

  • Use navigational channels whenever possible, or stay in deeper waters.
  • Trim up engines if possible when near seagrass beds.
  • If aground trim up motor, and push off from the ground.
  • Use your vessel to pick up your anchor from above, instead of dragging.
  • If you walk in seagrass, try not to shuffle your feet.

Just Visiting?

Welcome! We love being a focal point for travelers of every background. And, we want you to be able to enjoy visiting for generations to come. That also takes some effort on your part though.

If you are renting a vessel and have little experience, please don’t be afraid to ask about eelgrass beds and how to avoid them (most of our local guides and shops are happy to give out tips!).

It can’t be THAT easy, can it?

Here’s the thing… it IS that easy. Simply being mindful of the beautiful forests below you and taking simple steps (that also make your life easier) is all it takes to ensure our eelgrass beds are able to thrive and perform their duties.
